    For aircraft and gliders, there is a choice of seven wing configurations, from the simplest single-servo setup, to wings with eight servos. Tailless wings are similarly supported. Tail configuration options include V-tail and 'ailevator' (tailerons). For helicopters, there's a choice of 8 swashplate configurations. However, with availability of programmable mixers, this is unlikely to be a constraint in practice. For example, setting up cross trims is just a question of re-assigning the trim levers. Or an unused trim lever can be used to drive an auxiliary channel. Multiple servos can be linked to the same function, thus avoiding the need for Y-leads in the model. Each linked servo can be adjusted for travel and centring. One obvious application is twin elevator and rudder servos for large models. Finally, servos can be assigned to any channel number. This makes it easy to emulate the channel arrangement of another transmitter. It's not an all-or-nothing feature either as the user decides which features should be condition dependent and which should be global. Not only is this a challenging model to program, but with the fast speeds (up to 90 mph) and short 100 meter course, fast servos and minimal latency are essential to avoid having to 'anticipate the buzz' at each end of the run. In short, to replicate the setup that I've honed on the Multiplex 4000 over many seasons of competitive flying. I set up three flight conditions named Landing, Normal and Launch, all controlled by a three-position switch. I then programmed the same switch to deactivate the snapflap and crow mixers according to the flight condition.     At just over 1 kg the box is nicely weighted without being heavy and it also feels comfortable to hold, thanks to the use of rubber mouldings and textured surfaces. The angle is adjustable using an Allen key, and when not in use the aerial can be stored in a recess near the bottom of the case. With the aerial extended, there is a slight tendency for the top to tip down, while the opposite is the case when the aerial is removed for 2.4 GHz operation. Either way, balance is acceptable. Unfortunately, while its large size is commendable, the contrast is rather poor. No amount of tweaking the contrast menu helped, and when working indoors I often found myself wishing for a backlight. The spring tension was a bit weak for my liking, but was easily adjusted using an Allen key. These have a ratchet action and a centre detent, though the centre positions were barely detectable on the review unit. The size of each increment is adjustable and their positions are displayed on the LCD. All switches are three-position types, except for the rear shoulder switches, which are two-position. All switches are of excellent quality with a silky feel and minimal lateral play. As we'll see later, all have freely assignable functions. The electronics are mainly confined to a single motherboard that is dominated by a huge 120-pin custom chip. All in all a remarkably low component count for such a capable system. Of course this also means there's less to go wrong! Inevitably though, squeezing so much functionality into a small box has led to one or two compromises that may be noticed especially by those coming from a Euro style box. The transmitter feels a little too 'busy', and I'd have liked unused switches to be removable as on the 12Z and 14MZ. Finally, little concession has been made to the needs of the thumb-and-forefinger style flyer, except via the rather limited stick length adjustment.

There are just two controls: a large dial labelled 'edit’, which you either twist or click, and a smaller button labelled 'S1'. Press a bit longer, and you're all the way back to the opening screen. Within a menu, navigation and data entry are performed in an equally consistent manner. The Linkage menus are where you do all the basic setting up, including creating new models, frequency selection, control assignments, and servo adjustments. Finally the Model menus are where you set up the flight conditions, response curves, and mixers. All in all, the user interface is consistent and reasonably quick, though the consistency breaks slightly when it comes to the individual mixer screens. Unfortunately there isn't space to cover everything, so I'll choose a few key features.

    Nevertheless, retrimming was accomplished with great ease and soon the Sting was having a ball. Nicest of all, the control responses were noticeably quicker than the 4000. I have read somewhere that there is a hidden menu where you can change what the default model setting will be for the memories, but I don't know how to access that menu. But as I hope you know the default setting of the model memories doesn't change the fact that all three variants can handle both airplanes (motorized and sail) and helicopters. So to use it for Helis, all I have to do is remove the ratchet mechanism. I'm curious though on the CHP models which don't have the ratchet, what is used to create resistance and keep the throttle stick from being too loose? I have just took the back off the radio. Then took the ratchet mechanism and turned it over. There is hump on one side, for a ratchet the hump is facing towards the front. Take the two screws out, turn it over so the hump faces the back of the radio. Put the two screws back in. Then work the throttle stick.You can use it to set defaults for a new model to heli or acro and ppm or pcm.

The size of each increment is adjustable and their positions are displayed on the LCD. All switches are three-position types, except for the rear shoulder switches, which are two-position. All switches are of excellent quality with a silky feel and minimal lateral play. As we'll see later, all have freely assignable functions. The electronics are mainly confined to a single motherboard that is dominated by a huge 120-pin custom chip. All in all a remarkably low component count for such a capable system. Of course this also means there's less to go wrong! Inevitably though, squeezing so much functionality into a small box has led to one or two compromises that may be noticed especially by those coming from a Euro style box. The transmitter feels a little too 'busy', and I'd have liked unused switches to be removable as on the 12Z and 14MZ. As a 4000 owner, I was keen to see how Futaba's new offering would stack up as a possible replacement. These included a smart looking transmitter, R5114 receiver, mains charger and user manual. Also included were a couple of Allen keys, and a bright orange neck strap.     All mixers are based on the 'master-slave' concept, whereby one control affects multiple servos. For example, with the ELE-CAMBER mixer, an elevator command will move all the servos assigned to the Camber function. For example, most have an AFR page for setting the curves. A second page allows a further percentage rate to be applied to each servo. A third page specifies how the mixer is activated; e.g. permanently, or via a dedicated switch, or according to flight condition. For example, you can use a volume knob to adjust aileron differential. Or the amount of ELE-FLAP mixing can be automatically reduced as flaps are deployed. All-in-all the programming on the Futaba 12FG is superbly flexible, the only slight niggle being the aforementioned lack of servo-side curves. This is a full-house competition glider, with four servos in the wing, and two in the V-tail. Not only is this a challenging model to program, but with the fast speeds (up to 90 mph) and short 100 meter course, fast servos and minimal latency are essential to avoid having to 'anticipate the buzz' at each end of the run. In short, to replicate the setup that I've honed on the Multiplex 4000 over many seasons of competitive flying. I set up three flight conditions named Landing, Normal and Launch, all controlled by a three-position switch. I then programmed the same switch to deactivate the snapflap and crow mixers according to the flight condition. Finally the rotary knobs were programmed to allow snapflap and aileron rates to be adjusted during flight. This might seem a simple task, but on many radios it is difficult or impossible to achieve. After some experimentation, a solution was found via the undocumented 'offset' mix. Nevertheless it did offer a chance to test the 12FG's compatibility with a third party PPM receiver, and no problems were encountered. Inevitably the model had to be re-trimmed, mixer and diff adjusted, in fact it was like starting with a brand new model, let alone a new radio.

    Nevertheless, retrimming was accomplished with great ease and soon the Sting was having a ball. Nicest of all, the control responses were noticeably quicker than the 4000. Other F3F flyers using 12FG's have reported similar quick response in PCM-G3 mode. It's often the little details which count. Yet the more I got to know it, the more reluctant I was to give it back. It's a superbly flexible piece of kit, both in terms of programming and in the RF options available. It's accurate, responsive and should be well up to the task of controlling the most complex of models. The sticks are excellent too. It has to be said that the user manual doesn't cut the mustard for such a complex piece of kit, although there are various Internet forums available to get help if needed. Also the LCD is crying for a backlight. Finally, the duration on a full charge can only be described as average. And just like the 14MZ it offers a viable route into 2.4 GHz. However, if you're looking for a top end system with all-round flexibility, and you can afford the price tag, the Futaba 12FG deserves a place near the top of your shortlist.     For aircraft and gliders, there is a choice of seven wing configurations, from the simplest single-servo setup, to wings with eight servos. Tailless wings are similarly supported. Tail configuration options include V-tail and 'ailevator' (tailerons). For helicopters, there's a choice of 8 swashplate configurations. However, with availability of programmable mixers, this is unlikely to be a constraint in practice. For example, setting up cross trims is just a question of re-assigning the trim levers. Or an unused trim lever can be used to drive an auxiliary channel. Multiple servos can be linked to the same function, thus avoiding the need for Y-leads in the model. Each linked servo can be adjusted for travel and centring. One obvious application is twin elevator and rudder servos for large models. Finally, servos can be assigned to any channel number. This makes it easy to emulate the channel arrangement of another transmitter. It's not an all-or-nothing feature either as the user decides which features should be condition dependent and which should be global. Each condition is assigned a priority, the highest priority taking precedence if multiple conditions are selected. This can greatly reduce the load on the pilot. Logic switches may be defined based on two switches, using AND, OR or EOR operators. Curves may be linear or exponential, or point-based (up to 17 points). Expo can be set separately in each direction. I was pleased to see that the end-points act as true electronic end stops, essential on models which use aggressive mixing. On the downside, these adjustments are too crude to match up the movement of large paired control surfaces like flaps, where even the slightest differences in linkage geometry can cause subtle mistracking which is difficult to correct. It's a shame that Futaba did not include an AFR (curves) option for each servo, in order to correct for this.

    Prior to setting up THR-HOLD, hook up the throttle linkage so that the carburetor is opened fully at high throttle, then use the digital trim to adjust the engine idle position. Curves are separately adjustable for normal, idle-up 1, idle-up 2, and idle-up 3. In addition, a separate collective pitch curve is available for throttle hold. Stevie, the menus are similar to the 7c, any questions you cant figure out from there just ask away, its an easy radio to program and all you will need for a radio for a long time. In other parts of the world such as the UK it is designated the Futaba Field Force 9. The North American market usually has the 9CA and the 9CH. Where there is markets in the rest of the world that they only have one model and it is not designated Airplane or Heli. David So I'm trying to understand what is it meant for Airplane or Heli? Thanks-ZC The 9CA has on the top left corner a two position switch. On the top right corner is a three position switch. The throttle has a ratchet on it, and the radio defaults to airplane mode. The 9C has a three position switch on the top left. This would be the idle up switch. On the top right is a two position switch. This is the throttle hold switch. The throttle collective moves smoothly ( no ratchet). The radio defaults to heli mode. Like I mentioned above, the FF9 is the model the rest of world gets as far as I know. So most heli pilots just open the back of the radio and modify the ratchet on the throttle so it will move smoothly. David So I'm trying to understand what is it meant for Airplane or Heli?

    I know that it is the 9CP that is sold in Sweden with this as the argument. (Though I would expect the British market to be large enough to be able to hold both variants, but of course this is a decision for the importer to take.) If it has the switches located as the 9CHP that's great for heli pilots. I don't know how strong the preferences are for switch location among airplane pilots. I have read somewhere that there is a hidden menu where you can change what the default model setting will be for the memories, but I don't know how to access that menu. But as I hope you know the default setting of the model memories doesn't change the fact that all three variants can handle both airplanes (motorized and sail) and helicopters. So to use it for Helis, all I have to do is remove the ratchet mechanism. I'm curious though on the CHP models which don't have the ratchet, what is used to create resistance and keep the throttle stick from being too loose? I have just took the back off the radio. Then took the ratchet mechanism and turned it over. There is hump on one side, for a ratchet the hump is facing towards the front. Take the two screws out, turn it over so the hump faces the back of the radio. Put the two screws back in. Then work the throttle stick.You can use it to set defaults for a new model to heli or acro and ppm or pcm. Also you can set whether or not switches are 2 position or 3 position (radio south will install 3 position switches in place of the 2 position for triple rates etc) The easy way to access it is to buy a special campac, Finless can point you in the right direction. The service menu on the 9C really doesn't offer much. The service menu on the 9Z will allow the calibration of the sticks, checking that swtiches are working properly. It will also allow to tell where a two position or 3 position switch is installed in each location. Only way to change the what the radio will default to.

    Installed mine on my Hitec eclipse 7, of course I had to invert it to fit, very easy to do. The D8R receiver bound really quick, so easy, and reconnects almost instantly. Well worth the money, and great price. I must say, that it was a snap to use and set up, as I already have the Futaba 9CAP radio and this plug-in just like a module. True to the directions, I was able to get this up and paired with the receiver in no time. So far, I have not experience any problems whatsoever. I have not done extensive range checking on this unit as of yet, but I suspect that they will do well. For the price, you can't beat this combination. The 2nd related story was the Hitec Spectra module would work in the Futaba 9C. I understand the 9Z is a different chassis and design from the 9C so further discussion about that platform can probably be set aside. All of the preceding brings me to ask the questions: Will Hitec receivers i.e. Electron 6 work with the Futaba synth module in the 9C Super. Is the synth module only functional with PCM receivers? (That would explain the first question if Yes) Will the Hitec Spectra module work correctly in the 9C Super? It's been suggested that the 9Z will work if I switch to a fixed frequency module. On my 9C, it works fine with the other brand negative shift PPM rx's. But it is the fixed frequency module and I've not had reason to buy a synthesized module for it, so I can't say about the 9C synthesized module. But I'd almost be willing to bet it won't work if what I was told about the 9Z module is accurate, why would Futaba change the programming for the 9C module. All my other models use Futaba PCM rx's. All of my models are on the same frequency right now so when I pull the trigger on the 9C super I will go with the single freq. module. It is just that lately the addiction to RC has approached a chronic state and some of the items I have been eying have receivers of a different channel than my current xmtr, some Hitec, some Futaba.I was just really intrigued with what the 9Z will do, but I only got to fly it a few times before the snow shut us down for the Winter around here.     If it moves and its not meant too.use duct tape! A bonus of this is that its Tx module now contains the crystal from my KDS450S. OK this means that I have to swap modules between my Raptor and KDS,but at least I didn't have to buy a pair of crystals to put the KDS on the same freq. Radio was purchased with our own funds.)The average to advanced rc pilot will be thoroughly satisfied with the features and The switches and throttle on the 9CH are optimized for helicopters, but they work with airplanes just fine. The 9C family of radios transmits in both standard FM and the PCM mode. The weight and the snazzy chrome finish combine to give a feeling of quality. It is easily removed for channel changes, or to save power when using a flight simulator. It is more expensive than the standard RF module, but very convenient at crowded fields. The pages contain explanations of each function of the radio, as well as practical examples. This makes it really easy to understand what to do.

    It has four buttons and a large rotary dial near the front bottom of the case. The screen also does graphics such as helicopter setup curves. The rotary dial helps you find the function you need, very fast. Then push the End button to close the function. No trim adjustments when switching models. Less chance of using the wrong model. Do not have to reinvent the wheel each time. Rachet removed on 9CH throttle to allow perfect hovering. Radios can be purchased for less money, but are sometimes outgrown quickly. The 9C's many functions and model memories, ease of programming and quality of manufacture will keep the average radio control pilot happy for many years. Find out more Good number of model memories with aditional ones available through a campac. Comfortable to use. Synthesised module for easy channel switching. Compatibility with 2.4 ghz systems. Futaba quality and reliability. I can't think of a better 35 mhz transmitter. Good range of mixes - including free mixes (unlike Tony Charnock's, mine has 7 free mixes including 2 with 5 point curves and I've used throttle to elevator mixes on several occasions) Silver coating wrinkles and comes away. It has done everything I wanted it to. I would, and have, recommended one to friends. There must be better ways of implementing digital trims (not as good as analogs). Buddy box set up must be fully tested. Do not like charger socket. Could do with better 'ring tones' and it is not easy reading battery volts. TM7 2.4GHz module looks Heath Robinson when installed Never missed a beat. Dropped it a couple of times - does not bounce much. Had a switch lever pop out. Ripmax supplied spares straight from stock. Used mainly for aerobatics slope and power. Cannot say how many hours but the timer has been round the clock several times. Only one crash - vertical dive from a reversal. Nothing to do with the FF9 (Bad design of connector on elevator servo). I like the large screen.

MEMORY MODULE INITIALIZE DISPLAY This warning appears when an (optional) CAMPac memory module is used in the transmitter for the first time. Most people think the sBUS system is a waste of money but it really does clean things up and since an sBUS capable RX comes with this TX, I had to try it out. I use it with a multicopter running AeroQuad code, made a small sBUS library to be able to use the RX to its full potential, and it's incredible how steady the channels are now. Not only that, I went from being able to use 8 channels to 14 in the blink of an eye. My only complaint is that it takes forever to charge the battery (manual says 12 hrs) - my old Spektrum would charge in an hour. I'll be buying backup batteries soon. I fly mode MODE2, as is proposed here only mode MODE1. It's easy to change, in the statement, which comes complete with a transmitter that is well documented.
